Bottom line

AppSheet is a no-code app builder that turns spreadsheets and business data into web and mobile apps with workflows and automation attached. Its clearest strength is how quickly a small team can go from data to a working app, with free testing for up to 10 users and a $5 per user Starter tier. The main cost to watch is licensing, since every signed-in user and every guest device counts toward the license total, and the top governance tier requires a Google Workspace administrator account. It suits teams already working in Google Workspace that need internal apps without hiring developers.

Choose AppSheet ifgoogle Workspace teams building internal tools, or operations and field teams needing offline data capture.
Look elsewhere ifpublic-facing apps that need no sign-in on a standard plan, or organizations with many guest users who open apps on separate devices.

What is AppSheet?

AppSheet is a no-code platform from Google for building business apps and automated workflows on top of the spreadsheets, files, and databases a company already uses. It addresses the gap between a spreadsheet that has outgrown its usefulness and a custom software project that would otherwise take months and several developers. Apps built with it run on desktop and mobile devices and cover uses such as project management, field work, operations, human resources, sales, and marketing.

Day to day, a builder connects AppSheet to a data source such as Google Sheets, a hosted Excel file, Smartsheet, Airtable, or a SQL database, and the app editor generates a working prototype from that data. Screens are assembled from tables, galleries, charts, maps, dashboards, and forms, while spreadsheet-style expressions handle filtering, dynamic interface elements, and workflow logic. Triggers, conditions, and branches drive automation, and apps can send email, SMS, and push notifications. Forms can capture barcodes, locations, signatures, and photos, and offline apps sync in the background once a connection returns. Paid Google Workspace users can also describe an app in plain language and have Gemini generate it.

AppSheet is aimed at freelancers, small businesses, mid-size businesses, and enterprises. Pricing has three paid tiers: Starter at $5 per user per month, Core at $10 per user per month, and Enterprise Plus at $20 per user per month. Anyone can build and test apps with up to 10 users at no cost, and Core is included in some Google Workspace plans. Nonprofit and educational organizations can qualify for discounts with verified tax-exempt status.

What sets AppSheet apart from typical no-code tools is its tie to Google Workspace and its governance controls. It connects directly to Gmail, Google Sheets, Apps Script, and Google Chat, and apps can be published to Chat with one click. Enterprise Plus adds app lifecycle management, audit logs, version history, team and organization hierarchy, and governance policies that administrators can select from a library or write themselves. Customers keep full control of the data they put into the platform.
