Bottom line

Moodle is an open source learning management system that handles course delivery, assessments, progress tracking, and reporting. Its clearest strength is customization, since the code can be modified and extended through a large plugin library. The main cost to watch is administration: pricing is quoted on request, there is no free plan, and self-hosting requires technical staff or a Certified Partner. Schools, universities, and organizations that want control over their learning platform should consider it, while teams wanting a fully managed product with published prices may prefer another option.

Choose Moodle ifschools and universities building their own online learning environment, or organizations that want to customize or self-host their LMS.
Look elsewhere ifbuyers who want published, flat pricing, or teams that need a fully managed setup with no administration.

What is Moodle?

Moodle is a learning management system that lets educators and training teams build, deliver, and track online courses from one web-based platform. Its code is open source, so organizations can download, modify, and share it, and install it on their own servers or use a hosted version. It addresses the gap between needing online instruction and having a system that manages enrollments, content, assessments, and learner progress without locking the organization into a proprietary vendor.

Instructors build courses, add files, media, interactive content, and quizzes, then group them into learning paths. Learners sign in to complete activities, submit assignments, join discussion forums, and check their progress in the gradebook. Administrators manage enrollments, set role-based permissions, and produce customizable and real-time reports. The Moodle App lets learners work on phones and tablets online or offline. Integrations include Microsoft 365, Google Workspace, Zoom Workplace, BigBlueButton for virtual classrooms, H5P for interactive content, and MathType for equations, with SCORM and LTI support for existing materials.

Moodle serves higher education, K-12 schools, vocational training, government agencies, and corporate training teams. Moodle LMS is the open source core. Moodle Workplace runs on the same codebase and adds enterprise features such as multi-tenancy, recurring certifications, dynamic rules, and a drag-and-drop report builder. MoodleCloud is aimed at individuals who sell courses and small organizations with basic needs. Pricing is provided on request, with a starting price of $130 per year and a free trial available.

What sets Moodle apart is how far it can be customized. Because the code is open, an organization can change the system down to the code level, and the Moodle Marketplace offers a large library of plugins. Certified Integrations are vetted for user experience, coding standards, and compatibility. Most commercial LMS products are closed, so buyers who want control over their platform get a different tradeoff here: more flexibility, paid for with setup and administration effort. Organizations that want a managed setup can work with a Moodle Certified Partner.
