The EDGE review
Bottom line
The EDGE is trade-specific takeoff and estimating software for specialty subcontractors who need precise quantities and labor costs tied to their own materials. Its clearest strength is Smart Labor, which recalculates labor when job conditions change, and its pre-loaded manufacturer databases shorten setup. Buyers should plan for a quote-based price that starts at $299 per month, plus maintenance fees and the separate cost of EDGE On Site if field tracking is needed. It is best suited to commercial subcontractors in the supported trades who bid frequently.
What is The EDGE?
The EDGE is construction takeoff and cost estimating software built for specialty trade subcontractors, including acoustical, concrete, drywall, EIFS, fireproofing, flooring, painting, roofing, waterproofing and wall panels. It addresses the time and error cost of building bids from plans and spreadsheets by measuring quantities directly from drawings and pricing them with trade-specific material and labor data. The Estimating Edge LLC has offered the software since 1986 from Boynton Beach, Florida.
Day to day, estimators perform blueprint takeoff by mouse-click, and the software calculates trade quantities such as board counts and tile layouts for acoustical work, squares and flashing lengths for roofing, and cubic yards and forming footage for concrete. Smart Labor adjusts production rates when job conditions change, such as a taller wall or a tighter space. Estimators can copy any scenario to build alternates, generate change orders from existing estimate data, and push a material price change through every line item that references it. Proposal Writer turns a completed estimate into a client-ready bid using Microsoft Word templates and more than 100 pre-loaded data points.
The software is used by small, mid-size and enterprise subcontractors. Pricing starts at $299 per month, and quotes are handled through a personalized demo. A free trial is available, but there is no free plan. Unpaid maintenance blocks technical support and upgrades without interrupting license functionality, so buyers should factor maintenance into their budget.
What sets The EDGE apart is its trade-specific content. Each version comes with material databases from the manufacturers subcontractors use, such as Duro-Last roofing products, and buyers can add their own products, labor rates, overhead and bonding requirements. Integrations extend the workflow: FOUNDATION sync assigns cost codes and classes to every line and sends the awarded budget to the accounting system, while EagleView and Workpack feed aerial and plan-based measurements into EDGE Smart Takeoff. EDGE On Site carries estimates to the jobsite to track progress and catch overruns as they happen.
Who it's for
