Bottom line

Bench is a managed bookkeeping service in which a dedicated bookkeeper keeps the books current, supported by its online software. Its clearest strength is that the owner does not have to categorize transactions or reconcile accounts each month. The main cost is a monthly fee that starts at $199 and reaches $649 for the bundle with tax filing, and the company resumed service in January 2025 after a December 2024 pause. Pick Bench if you want your books handled for you and can accept a recurring managed-service fee.

Choose Bench ifsmall business owners who want books handled for them, or service businesses with fewer than a few hundred transactions a month.
Look elsewhere ifowners who want to categorize transactions themselves, or businesses seeking a free, self-serve accounting plan.

What is Bench?

Bench is an online bookkeeping service for U.S.-based small and growing businesses. It takes the recurring work of recording transactions, reconciling accounts, and producing financial statements off the owner's desk by assigning a dedicated bookkeeper who works in Bench's software. Employer.com acquired Bench in December 2024 after operations paused, and service resumed in January 2025 with the same in-house team.

Setup begins with a 15-minute call, after which the owner is matched with a bookkeeper. That bookkeeper catches up any past months and reconciles every account, transaction by transaction. Bank accounts connect through Plaid using read-only access, so transactions import without manual uploads. Each month the owner receives current books and can view real-time financials in the online portal. Owners can reach their bookkeeper by phone, message, or video call, and tax filing and advisory can be added to the same relationship.

Bench serves freelancers, solopreneurs, small businesses, and growing companies across many industries, including restaurants, salons, law firms, and healthcare practices. Pricing is subscription-based. Bookkeeping Light costs $199 per month for businesses with $250,000 or less in annual revenue, Bookkeeping costs $399 per month, and Bookkeeping + Tax costs $649 per month. Annual plans carry a 20% discount, and catch-up bookkeeping is free with an annual plan. Owners who already use QuickBooks can hire a fractional bookkeeper at $55 per hour, plus a $1,200 one-time onboarding fee.

What separates Bench from software-only tools is that the work is done for the customer. Instead of handing the owner a ledger to maintain, Bench assigns a named bookkeeper who is accountable for the books each month. Its fractional option lets a bookkeeper work directly inside an existing QuickBooks Online file, so owners can keep the system they already have. Security controls are backed by annual SOC 2 and SOC 3 examinations, with AES-256 encryption at rest and TLS 1.2 in transit.
