Bottom line

Dropbox is a cloud file storage, sync, and sharing service that has grown into document signing and video review. Its clearest strength is recovery, with version history, ransomware detection, and Rewind giving teams a practical way to undo mistakes. The main cost to watch is per-user pricing, since end-to-end encryption, single sign-on, and compliance tracking only come with the $24 per user Advanced plan. Teams that want a familiar cross-platform file hub with a free starting point should consider it.

Choose Dropbox ifsmall businesses sharing files with clients or contractors, or creative and media teams reviewing large video or design files.
Look elsewhere ifbuyers who need fixed, published pricing for enterprise-scale deployments, or teams that need end-to-end encryption on a lower-cost plan.

What is Dropbox?

Dropbox is a cloud storage and file sharing service that keeps files in one place and syncs them across computers, phones, and the web. It addresses the problem of files scattered across hard drives, flash drives, and email attachments, so the same current copy is available wherever a person signs in. The service began as a file sync tool in 2007 and has since added document signing, video review, and PDF editing.

Day to day, users install desktop apps for Windows, Mac, and Linux, or use the iOS and Android mobile apps and the browser. Files saved to Dropbox sync automatically, and team folders give groups a shared place for their materials. Shared links can be password protected and given expiration dates, and granular permissions control who opens each folder and what they can do there. Version history lets people roll files back, and deleted files can be restored for 30 days on Plus, 180 days on Standard, and one year on Advanced.

Free Basic accounts include 2 GB. Plus costs $9.99 per month for one person and includes 2 TB of storage. Standard costs $15 per user per month for teams, with no minimum seat count, and Advanced costs $24 per user per month for groups of three or more. Enterprise pricing is quoted by sales for organizations that want custom user counts and storage. The pricing page lists a 30-day free trial. Freelancers, small businesses, mid-size companies, and enterprises make up the typical customer base.

Compared with basic sync tools, Dropbox puts much of its weight on recovery and security. Ransomware detection, Rewind, which reverses changes at the folder or account level, and remote wipe for lost devices are all part of the product. It also connects to a wide set of outside tools, including ChatGPT, Claude, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva, and Microsoft 365, and it offers an API for custom builds. Advanced adds tiered admin roles and audit logs with file event tracking.
