Bottom line

Help Scout is a shared inbox and help desk that centers each customer's conversation history across email, chat, SMS, and social channels. Its clearest strength is how much context travels with each conversation, from assignments and SLA timers to company-level profiles. Watch the per-user pricing, the 10-user minimum on Pro, and the separate $0.75 per resolution charge if you use Envoy's AI agent at volume. Support teams that want a shared Inbox and AI drafting without a complex ticketing setup should consider it first.

Choose Help Scout ifgrowing support teams using a shared mailbox, or ecommerce and SaaS companies handling chat and social messages.
Look elsewhere ifteams that need a dedicated ticket-queue system with complex escalation rules, or very large organizations that need unlimited seats on a low-cost plan.

What is Help Scout?

Help Scout is a customer support platform that puts email, live chat, SMS, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp, and phone calls into one shared Inbox. It is built for teams that have outgrown a shared mailbox and need assignments, customer history, and handoffs to work without anyone digging through old threads. Its AI agent, Scout, answers common customer questions and escalates the rest to a person.

Incoming conversations arrive in the Inbox, where they can be assigned through round robin routing or workflows that tag, route, and reply automatically. Agents use saved replies that can be searched and inserted in two clicks. AI Drafts writes replies from past conversations and help content, AI Summarize condenses long threads into a few bullet points, and AI Assist can expand, shorten, or translate text. Customer profiles show conversation history in an editable sidebar, and SLA policies set and track response targets so work stays on schedule.

Freelancers, small businesses, mid-size companies, and enterprises all use Help Scout. The vendor lists solutions pages for ecommerce, education, financial services, healthcare, insurance, logistics, manufacturing, professional services, property management, real estate, and SaaS. Pricing is per user per month. The Free plan covers up to five users with one Inbox and one Docs site, Standard is $25 per user per month billed annually, Plus is $45, and Pro is $75 with a minimum of 10 users. AI resolutions through Envoy are an add-on at $0.75 per resolution.

Many help desks sell seat-based ticket queues. Help Scout centers on the conversation and the customer relationship, with Company Profile grouping activity by account and Signal surfacing trends across conversations. Its AI resolution pricing is charged per resolution rather than per seat, and the vendor's own calculator assumes an average resolution rate of 73%. Connections to AI tools through MCP give those tools access to customer conversations and context.
