Wagepoint review
Bottom line
Wagepoint is Canadian payroll software that calculates pay, remits federal, provincial, and territorial taxes, and produces T4s and ROEs. Its clearest strength is the accounting sync, which pushes payroll costs and liabilities into Xero or QuickBooks Online with account mapping. The main cost to watch is the per-employee fee on top of the monthly base, and time tracking and time off are only available on Plus. Canadian bookkeepers, accounting firms, and small businesses with Canadian payroll needs should consider it first.
What is Wagepoint?
Wagepoint is Canadian payroll software for small businesses and the bookkeepers and accountants who support them. It calculates pay, handles federal, provincial, and territorial tax remittances, and covers CPP, EI, and income tax deductions. It also produces year-end T4 and T4A slips and Records of Employment, which removes most of the manual calculation and CRA paperwork that payroll normally requires. Wagepoint was founded in 2012 and reports more than 30,000 businesses using the platform.
Day to day, an administrator builds a pay run that covers regular pay, bonuses, benefits, and vacation accruals, then sends direct deposits. Employees use a self-serve portal to view paystubs, check upcoming pay dates, update personal details, and track year-to-date earnings, and the My Wagepoint app lets them check pay information and submit time entries from a phone. Reporting includes payroll registers, tax summaries, Workers' Compensation reports, and year-end reports. The Plus plan adds time tracking with clock in and clock out, geo-fencing, and paid time off management, with approved hours flowing directly into payroll.
The product is built for Canadian small businesses, independent bookkeepers, and accounting firms that manage payroll for clients. Pricing is tiered. Lite costs $20 per month plus $4 per employee or contractor, Core costs $40 per month plus $6 per employee or contractor, and Plus costs $80 per month plus $10 per employee or contractor. Lite limits pay runs to one per month, while Core and Plus allow unlimited pay runs and off-cycle payrolls. A free trial is available, but there is no free plan.
What sets Wagepoint apart is its connection to accounting software. It integrates with Xero, QuickBooks Online, FreshBooks, Karbon, 7shifts, and Deputy. The QuickBooks Online integration maps payroll expenses and liabilities to the chart of accounts, including subaccounts, and exports them as journal entries or payroll bills. The Xero sync pushes wages, employer benefit contributions, employer payroll taxes, employee deductions, and Wagepoint subscription fees into the books each pay period. Security includes single sign-on, two-factor authentication, FINTRAC compliance, and SOC 2 certification.
