Canopy review
Bottom line
Canopy is a practice management platform for accounting and tax firms that combines client records, workflow, documents, billing, and payments in one login. Its clearest strength is replacing a stack of separate tools with a single connected system. The main cost to watch is that pricing is provided on request and starts at a usage-based rate, and the Coworker AI agent is still coming soon. Firms that want one system of record for their practice should shortlist it.
What is Canopy?
Canopy is practice management software built for accounting, tax, bookkeeping, and audit firms. Client management sits at the center of the product, and client records, CRM, document management, workflow, time and billing, engagements, and proposals all live in one system. It addresses a common problem in small and mid-size firms, where client data is spread across separate tools and staff spend their days switching between logins.
Day to day, staff manage clients, documents, billing, intake, and client communication from a single login. Time can be tracked with live timers, manual entry, or inside a specific task, and those entries feed WIP reports and prebuilt profitability, realization, and utilization reports. Billing includes retainer billing that breaks large engagements into milestones, branded invoices, and automatic reminders for past-due balances. Smart Intake sends pre-filled questionnaires and secure upload links to clients, and document storage, electronic signatures, and optical character recognition are built in. Invoices and files can be shared through a client portal, and card and ACH payments can be collected directly within Canopy.
Canopy serves solo practitioners, mid-size firms, and large firms, with dedicated offerings for tax teams, bookkeeping teams, audit teams, advisory teams, and private equity firms. Pricing is provided on request, with a starting point of $150 per month on a usage-based model. A free trial is available, but there is no free plan. More than 15,000 accounting practitioners use the platform.
What distinguishes Canopy is the breadth of one connected system. Workflow, billing, and documents are natively linked, so firms can automate tasks such as creating work items when a client uploads a file, without building custom integrations. Canopy also connects to QuickBooks Online, Xero, and tax software including UltraTax CS, Lacerte, ProSeries, and Drake Tax. Security controls include role-based permissions, an audit log, multi-factor authentication, and single sign-on. Its AI agent, Canopy Coworker, is marked as coming soon, so buyers should evaluate the features available today.
