Motive review
Bottom line
Motive is a web-based fleet management and driver safety platform that brings ELD compliance, GPS tracking, dash cameras, maintenance, and fuel spending into one system. Its clearest strength is the depth of its compliance tooling, including ELD logging for the U.S. and Canada and hours-of-service alerts. The main cost to watch is that pricing is not published and must be requested through sales, with no free plan or trial. It suits mid-size and enterprise fleets that want safety, compliance, and maintenance managed together.
What is Motive?
Motive is a fleet management and driver safety platform that combines GPS tracking, electronic logging, dash cameras, maintenance, fuel cards, and workforce tools in one web dashboard. It addresses a common problem for fleet operators: vehicle location, driver compliance, safety events, and repair records often sit in separate systems that don't talk to each other.
Day to day, drivers log hours of service and complete inspection reports in the Motive Driver App on a phone or tablet. The app connects to the vehicle's engine control module to record driving, on-duty, and off-duty time. The Vehicle Gateway, a hardware device with built-in cellular connectivity, syncs vehicle and driver data to the platform and detects coachable events. Managers use the dashboard to build custom reports and dashboards, and Atlas, the AI assistant, can generate reports and summarize information. Document workflows let managers and drivers exchange forms and signatures.
Motive serves fleets in construction, oil and gas, public sector, field service, delivery, trucking and logistics, and utilities. Its typical customers range from freelancers and small businesses to enterprises. Pricing is not published, and no free plan or free trial is offered, so buyers request pricing through the sales team, which can also arrange a tour or demo.
What sets Motive apart is how much of fleet operations it covers in a single system. Compliance, AI dash cams, equipment monitoring, maintenance, and a fleet card all share one data set. The platform also offers a developer API and integrations with tools such as QuickBooks Online, Fleetio, MaintainX, and Microsoft Power BI. Driver privacy controls, including Driver Privacy Mode and automatic face and license plate blurring, address the concerns drivers often raise about in-cab cameras.
