Bottom line

Stripe Payments is a pay-as-you-go payment platform that covers online checkout, payment links, in-person terminals, and global payouts under one account. Its clearest strength is reach, with more than 100 payment methods and 135+ currencies available through a single integration. The main cost to watch is that there is no free plan or trial, and dispute and cross-border fees add up on top of the base rate. It suits online sellers, subscription businesses, and marketplaces that expect to sell across borders.

Choose Stripe Payments ifonline sellers taking cards and local payment methods, or marketplaces and platforms paying out multiple sellers.
Look elsewhere ifbuyers who need a free plan to start, or teams without developer resources who need a fully custom checkout.

What is Stripe Payments?

Stripe Payments is the payment processing product from Stripe, LLC. It lets a business accept cards, bank debits, and other payment methods online, in person, and across borders from one account. It addresses the work of connecting card networks, local payment methods, fraud screening, and payouts, which a business would otherwise handle through separate providers.

Day to day, a business enables payment methods from the Stripe Dashboard and then picks how customers pay. Payment links need no code and can be shared by email, SMS, or as a QR code, and they accept one-time, recurring, or pay-what-you-want payments. For a website, a prebuilt hosted checkout page or Elements, a set of UI components with customizable styling, places the payment form inside the site. Link, Stripe's one-click checkout, lets returning customers pay with saved details. Radar screens transactions for fraud, and Terminal handles in-person payments. Payouts can run on a rolling basis, weekly, or monthly.

Stripe serves freelancers, small businesses, mid-size businesses, and enterprises. Platforms and marketplaces use it to onboard sellers and split a single payment across several recipients. The Standard plan is pay-as-you-go at 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card transaction, with no setup or monthly fees. Businesses with large volume or unique models can request a Custom package with volume discounts, multi-product discounts, and country-specific rates.

What sets Stripe apart from simpler card processors is breadth. A single integration gives access to more than 100 payment methods, 135+ currencies, and cardholders in 195 countries. The same platform also covers subscriptions, invoicing, sales tax automation, revenue recognition, and Connect for marketplaces. That range lets a business replace several separate systems for payments, payouts, and seller management with one account.
