Bottom line

Harvest is time tracking tied directly to invoicing, built for firms that bill clients from logged hours or budgets. Its clearest strength is that tracked time, expenses, and budgets flow into invoices and reports without a separate tool. The main cost to watch is that timesheet approvals, profitability reporting, custom reports, and SAML SSO sit on the $14 Enterprise plan, and extra invoices, projects, and clients can add usage charges on Teams. It suits small and mid-size agencies, consultancies, and law or design firms that need billing and time records in one place.

Choose Harvest ifservice firms that bill clients by the hour, or consultancies and agencies tracking budgets against fees.
Look elsewhere ifteams that need SSO without moving to Enterprise, or companies seeking a flat price with no usage charges.

What is Harvest?

Harvest is a web-based time tracking and invoicing tool for professional services teams. It records billable and non-billable hours by client, project, and task, then turns those hours and logged expenses into invoices. It exists to close the gap between work done and money collected, which is where many service firms lose margin.

Day to day, team members start a one-click timer, fill in daily or weekly timesheets, or log time from calendar events. They can also track time from inside Asana, Trello, Jira, and Slack, or from a browser extension. Expenses are logged per project with photographed receipts. Managers approve timesheets, watch team capacity, and receive alerts when a project is about to exceed its budget. Invoices are built from tracked time and billable expenses, clients can pay from the invoice, and automatic reminders go out for overdue payments.

Harvest serves freelancers, small businesses, and mid-size firms, and its industry pages cover advertising, architecture, construction, law, accounting, consulting, design, and software development. Pricing is per seat. The Free plan covers one seat and two projects at no cost. Teams costs $9 per seat per month billed annually, with unlimited seats, and Enterprise costs $14 per seat per month billed annually. Annual billing takes 20% off, and a 30-day trial requires no credit card.

What sets Harvest apart from general project tools is its focus on billing. Rates can be set per person, per project, or per task type, so the right rate applies automatically. Retainers and fixed-fee estimates can be tracked against hour banks and budgets in real time. The company traces its origins to 2006, when two small business owners built the tool to run their own web design agency in New York City.
